Do you find what it is that you seek here?
I will be attending the blogher conference in San Jose on Friday of this week, and I will be co-leading a discussion on blogging of the maternal persuasion. Sometimes referred to by the beleaguered title "mommyblogging" which sounds too much to me like "scrapbooking" if you want my opinion. Not that there is anything wrong with that...
At any rate, I will be co-leading a discussion with two more established bloggers who also happen to be incredibly smart and funny,Jenny and Jenn .
I love that you pop in to my site, treasured reader. Would you please be so kind as to tell me what encourages you to come to my blog, what it is that you are looking for, and whether or not you find it on a reasonably regular basis? Your feedback will be very much appreciated. It may in fact, help prevent me from looking like a total nimrod in front of a large group of women and men who have been doing this a lot longer than I have! Think of it as a mercy mission of sorts. Or perhaps your good deed for the day. Thanks in advance you lovely lovely morsels of kindhearted people.

Meghan--I love your blog because you “keep it real,” by which I mean you have a way of being honest with your readers, of telling it like it is. In fact, you remind me of Dooce a lot and I like your self-aware, sarcastic, yet loving take on life in suburbia.
Also, I like all the cuss words.
And I like the fact that you make having kids seem less scary by being so open about your own doubts and triumphs.
But, most of all, I appreciate the fact that you’re a good storyteller. And everybody likes a good story.
P.S. Good luck at the conference--I wish I was going! :)
I agree: Mommyblogger sound so pedestrian.
It connotes an idea that you will only talk on and on about your kids and how cloyingly cute they are. And while I have (plenty of) those moments, I also blog about all aspects of my life including my work and my passion and my gripes and so on, just like any other blog. And I'm a mom.
My concern with some of the mommyblogs is that in the search for humor about parenting, employs a tone in which humor comes at the expense of parenting and even occasionally at the expense of the child.
I don't have a problem with finding humor in the zaniness of kids and the trials of parenting (I blog about these things too) but the overall tone can become almost anti-child in some blogs. The blogger ends up basically saying in post after post: "Look what a pain in the ass parenting is! Look what I put up with! Look at the nightmare!" without the other side of the story surfacing very frequently.
When blogging, I try to temper my complaining and moaning (which is a normal and natural part of parenting) with the fierce joy and deeper sense of love and satisfaction I get from being a mom.
Ultimately, I guess no real harm is done by the blogger if their post are generally negative about parenting. However, when it is all said and done, that is a blog I will stop reading, even if it is hilarious.
So, I'll step off my soapbox now. Sorry for the diatribe. You asked.
PS. I think you strike a nice balance in tone. I wasn't referring (above) to your blog, which I really enjoy. I agree with the first posters comments about what makes your blog good.
Hi -- I just found the blogging world. I don't have a blog but I do read many. I guess what I'm looking for is a mommy just like me that makes all this parenting seem funny and makes me feel okay for screwing it up. You do that well and you make me laugh. Keep on blogging and I'll keep coming back.
I agree with JB, especially on the third point about your blog:
"And I like the fact that you make having kids seem less scary by being so open about your own doubts and triumphs."
I have no interest in Children, nor do I have any interest in reading anything that could possibly be dubbed a "mommyblog." Perhaps I should reconsider my visits here.
I visit the site because I appreciate the irreverent commentary on suburban life. I find your combination of F-bombs and parenthood to be entirely amusing. Thanks for the entertainment. Keep up the good work.
I come here and read because I find you funny.
I find my brain is mushy and yours is sharp and I'm jealous... but I keep coming back anyways. :)
Okaay. Now my comment seems like a bunch of smug, prissy, "better than the others" crap that I usually disassociate myself from faster than I can turn off the TV when Barney comes on. So. Just wanted to say that. I'm not a prat. Really.
Also, Meghan, thanks for your comments on my blog and feel free to use my post/comments for your Blogher discussion. Wish I was there.
First and formost - I come because you are really fucking funny. You are honest about motherhood which very few people are. You make me feel like I am not insane about feeling the frustration and the love I have with being a mother. Reading your blog makes me feel connected to a larger community. This is very important since I have to stay inside with my son because he was four months premature and going out to visit the unwashed masses could make hiim very ill. I feel very isolated, so when I am feeling lonely I can go online and you can make me laugh so hard I pee my pants.
You manage to strike that balance that works for readers of different ages. I'm a grandmother and the balance you strike works for me! Keep up the good words and have fun at Blogher!
