Raw deal

Having just read this Article, I have an overwhelming urge to kick the nearest American policymaker in the gonads. Viva La France.

p.s. If you want to find out how to actually DO something about it, check out momsrising.org,and sign up here.

Wow. Makes you want to move to France! It sure would make my decision to have kids much easier if I knew that I would have some help financially too. As it is right now, not only does my company not offer any maternity leave but because it is a small business, I don't qualify to file for FMLA. Makes it harder to know that for any time you take off won't be paid. And my whole 5 days of vacation time isn't squat.

And then that a large portion of my checks would have to go to child care...because I don't think we can afford for me to completely stay at home...urg. These things weigh on me heavily right now....

The company that tried to fire me when I was pregnant (for being a pregnant contractor) eliminated the four weeks of parental leave it previously offered. This company was also recognized by Working Mother as one of the top 100. Fucked up, isn't it?

In addition to checking out Momsrising.org, we can also stop leveling judgment against working mothers here at home - either explicitly (ahem, Caitlin Flanagan) or implicitly (through offhand comments about daycare and the virtues of staying at home). That aspect of the article - how working mothers are viewed in France - blew me away even more than the benefits families enjoy there.

Meghan: I tried top read it, but the page "expired". So, I'm depending on the Bloggers before me here. Yes, I once had a boss from hell who forced a colleague of mine to resign after he refused to fire three women sales reps for the crime of being age 40 or over. The workplace worldwide is becoming nuts, isn't it? lol!
